Talk about ingenious, Pandora has taken the idea of Law of Attraction music to a whole new level with the Music Genome Project. By categorizing the music of hundreds of thousands of recording artists, they've made it possible to listen to your favorite music AND discover new indie artists that might be flying under the radar. Like me.
So let's say you like Bruce Springsteen (and who doesn't!) You can create a radio station called (can you guess?) Bruce Springsteen. The Music Genome Project has determined that Bruce's music is filled with electric rock instrumentation, acoustic rhythm piano, extensive vamping, major key tonality, a dynamic male vocalist, a prominent saxophone part, prominent organ and heartbreaking lyrics. Wow. That's a pretty accurate description!
Pandora lines up other artists with similar qualities. In Bruce's case, you'll likely hear some U2, Tom Petty, Coldplay and other great bands. Not sure you want a steady diet of Bruce and his friends? You can name a genre of music and get a mix of artists within a particular style - Celtic, Classical, Chant, etc. - and like magic, you'll listen to a creative assortment within the genre. And it's all free (with a very limited number of ads) or for a modest subscription fee, you can listen ad-free.
Why am I telling you all of this? Oh yes...it's true.. it's now possible to create a station called Sandi Kimmel Radio featuring music from my three albums plus songs from a wide variety of artists that Pandora decided were a good match for my fans. I'm in great company! In fact, it's really fun to listen to the station because I find myself liking the music of all the other artists they've chosen to be on my station. I'm loving Cosy Sheridan, Jack Johnson, Kate Wolf and the rest of the artists I'm hearing.
The best part is that the Music Genome Project actually categorized my music...which I've been trying to do for YEARS! "New Age aesthetics, folk roots, gospel influences, mild rhythmic syncopation and acoustic sonority." Yup. That's me!
There's a lot more I could tell you about Pandora but you'll have a lot more fun discovering on your own. Start here and you'll make me (and you) very, very happy...http://broadcaster.pandora.com/t?r=927&c
